Brass helmet (˜1920)

Fire helmet from Poland. The brass helmet was worn between 1918 and 1939. The helmet shape was reserved for the officers. Sub officers and normal firefighters had a simpler helmet without the big, rear brim. Also chin scales and the comb padding did not exist on the simpler helmets. At the front there is an eagle with the letters OS on the chest. OS stands for "Ochotnicza Straz". (Volunteer firefighter). The abbreviation OS comes from the former Austrian area. After the reunification of Poland after the end of World War I, the acronym was retained. The helmets were mainly built by German or Austrian companies like Rosenbauer, Magirus or Metz. But there were also some Polish companies that made this helmet. Successor of the brass helmet is the steel helmet WZ35. See helmet number 1018 and 1011, Poland. |
