United States Leather helmet (˜1946)
In this collection since: 23.01.2016
0758 Fire helmet from the USA. The black leather helmet was made by Cairns & Brothers. The company had its headquarters in New York before moving it to Clifton, New Jersey in the middle of the 1940s. The helmet model 550 was produced from 1943, therefore the manufacturer's logo is already printed with "Clifton New Jersey". When there is no further sign before the word "Cairns" on the metal badge (that’s the information of some collectors) than that the helmet was built before 1947. The model no. 550 "Seamless Crown" is successor to model 430, also called Warbaby or Doughboy. (See helmet number 0638, USA). In addition to the model 550 "Seamless Crown" there was at the same time also the model 650 "Seamless Crown". The model 650 had a larger front shield and a larger brim. The helmet is made of only one piece of leather. The helmets were sewn with leather-covered ribs of steel wire. Inside the helmet, there is the 1941 patented and replaceable inner lining, the so-called Sanitary Cushion Liner inserted. Inside, a label is glued in addition to the manufacturer's well-known label. It contains the helmet size (71/2) and the production number (3336). At the front is the leather badge of the fire department. The Haley fire station and the "MFD" fire brigade, "Midland Fire Department" Haley is one of three fire stations in the city. The address is 816 E Haley St, 48640 Midland in the state of Michigan. The Midland Fire Department was founded in November 1944. The helmet should be one of the first helmets of this fire brigade.
