United States Leather helmet (˜1977)
In this collection since: 23.01.2015
0645 Fire helmet from the USA. The red leather helmet was worn at the fire department of the city of Houston, in the fire station 66. The manufacturer of the legendary helmet is Cairns & Brothers of Clifton New Jersey. The helmet model is 5A New Yorker. Originally, this model was developed and built for the FDNY, the fire brigade of New York. The FDNY, however, today used as a follow-up model Helmet No. 333, the Morning Pride Ben Franklin II made of fiberglass.
The leather helmet was manufactured in 1977 for the junior captain of the station 66.
The 15cm high, red leather front, made by Paul Conway Shields, describes the affiliation of his user and his rank. The fire station 66 has existed since 1973. It is located in 5800 Teague, 77041 Houston. In addition to the fire-fighting vehicle 66, the booster truck and an evacuation boat are also stationed there. The Booster Truck is a small-sized vehicle for extinguishing small fires such as waste containers or grass areas. The Evacuation Boat is used for the rescue of people during floods. Upon request to the HFD, Chief Evans writes: The helmet is from the captain of a fire-fighting vehicle. The red shield, the signal horn and the numbers show that. The designation Junior Captain was discontinued a few years ago. The current name is Captain. High officers use a white sign with red letters and the designation “senior captain” with two horns next to each other. The captain directs a fire truck, the senior captain directs a turntable.

For more information on the helmet, see No. 331, USA.
