Turkey Leather helmet (˜1950)
In this collection since: 17.09.2014
0621 Firefighter helmet from Turkey. The leather helmet comes from Istanbul. It is one of the rare helmets made of leather. Shields covering, comb and emblem are made of brass. The shields covering is missing on this helmet. The rather rare neck leather is preserved for this. The helmet was painted red. The triangular, pointed helmet comb is perforated laterally. It is typical of the old helmets of Turkey. The helmet shape corresponds to the German and Austrian brass helmets of the time around 1900. The helmet, however, is considerably younger. It was worn in the 1950s. The inner helmet is made of leather and cloth. The chin strap, also made of leather, is fastened to the inside on the side. On the front is a brass badge showing an exploding grenade and two crossed axes. The helmet is a successor to the brass helmets worn from around 1930 onwards. They too had the emblem attached. Since 1960, the successor helmet has been an American-style glass fiber helmet. See helmet 626 Turkey.
