United Kingdom (UK) Steel helmet (˜1940)
In this collection since: 21.09.2013
0544 Fire helmet from the UK. The olive green steel helmet was named after its inventor Baron Solly Zuckerman. It was produced in 1940 and 1941 and was intended for the civil defense during the second world war. The helmet was built in the UK from 6 different companies. This helmet was developed by PSC (Pressed Steel Company, Oxford). As the sign of the manufacturers PSC, the manufacture date is also stamped on the inside of the helmet rim and it indicated 3/41. In opposite to them is the size "M" stamped. Other sizes were S and L. The inner helmet is attached with a cord to the helmet bowl. The harness of the inner helmet is made of canvas, the circumferential headband made of leather. At the front stands in white letters: "SFP". That stands for "Street Fire Party", an early term for the later air raid warden (Fire Guard). His job was to report a fire, which resulted from the German bombing raids. The service was voluntary. After the war, the firefighters rejected this helmet. They preferred the flatter Mark II helmet that was worn during the war by the army and the air raid.
