Italy Synthetic helmet (˜1972)
In this collection since: 04.05.2013
0532 Fire helmet from Italy. The black helmet made of plastic was established in 1972. The manufacturer is the Italian company Mispa from Turin. The helmet type is called "Nazional". About 10 years after the Second World War, the Italian Fire Brigade Association "Corpo Nazionale dei vigili del Fuoco" laid down, that previous fire helmets are no longer sufficient for use in the fire service. Thus, the new type of helmet "Nazional" was developed which should be elegant but simple. So old traditions with new technology and materials have been interwoven.
While the manufacturers Pirelli Milan and Violini Milan produced helmets with ventilation holes, Mispa produced the helmets, until the end of 1960, without ventilation holes. At the front, the throughout Italy standardized emblem of the fire brigade was attached. It was first made of metal and showed, until 1961, a number that was assigned to the corresponding provincial capital. Then, the number was replaced against a cross. This helmet comes from the autonomous Italian region of Aosta (Aosta Valley). The fire emblem on the front is the badge of this region. It shows a flame, crossed axes and on the coat of arms, a lion above a crown. Another difference to helmets of other Italian regions is the visor and its attachment. In comparison, the perspex visor is relatively small. The hinges for the opening of the visor are mounted on a cardboard type ring. This ring is placed over the helmet bowl. A spring retracts the ring; two hooks below the hinges are hooked into the edge of the helmet.
The inner helmet and chin strap were taken from previous helmets. It is made of leather head ring, the head rest made of leather straps which were arranged in a circle and connected in the center and the simple leather chin strap with buckle. The helmet was worn during the period from early 1950 until the end of 1960. Regional even to the 1980.
