Italy Synthetic helmet (˜1965)
In this collection since: 11.04.2013
0529 Fire helmet from Italy. The black plastic helmet was manufactured in the period around 1965. Manufacturer is the company Pirelli in Milan. The helmet type is called "Nazional". About 10 years after the Second World War, the Italian Fire Brigade Association "Corpo Nazionale dei vigili del Fuoco" laid down, that previous fire helmets are no longer sufficient for use in service. Thus, the new type of helmet "Nazional" was developed, which should be elegant but simple. So old traditions with new technology and materials have been interwoven.
The helmet made of plastic, has been provided with two ventilation holes. At the front, the emblem of the fire brigade was attached. It was first made of metal and it showed (until 1961) a number, which was assigned to the corresponding provincial capital. Inner helmet and chin strap were taken from previous helmets. It is made of a leather head ring, the head rest made of leather straps which were arranged in a circle and connected in the center and the simple leather chin strap with buckle. The helmet was worn during the period from early 1950 until the end of 1960. Regional even until 1980. The company Violini Milan and Mispa Turin built this helmet, but later presented Mispa the helmet without ventilation holes and Violini the helmet made from phenolic resin.
In the period from the beginning of the 1970 years, these helmets were made from polycarbonate.
General information on the numbering of the fire brigades:
The numbers has existed between 1938 and 1961. The numbering was alphabetical, but Rome is renamed from number 73 to number 1 in 191. Overall, there were at the time of this numbering, 97 cities with separate numbers.
