Scotland (UK) Leather helmet (˜1910)
In this collection since: 07.03.2013
0503 Fire helmet from Scotland. The leather helmet was made by the Scottish company Hendry LTD in Glasgow. The model was called "Birmingham". Hendry built the helmet in the period around 1910. The black lacquered helmet was composed of several parts. The helmet bowl consists of two parts which are sewn together. The massive, high comb and the continuation of the comb, cover the center seam. The eye shield, edged with nickel silver and neck guard are also sewn to the helmet bowl. At the transition of the screens fastening the chin strap is mounted. The bolt penetrates the eyes and neck guard and has an outer square head typical of the model "Birmingham" is. The seam of the eyeshield is also covered by a nickel silver cover. On the inside of the neck shield, a stamp is attached: "JAS Hendry LTD - Glasgow". On the inside back of the helmet bowl the size designation is stamped: "7 ¼ M". The chin strap is made of a sturdy, thick fabric. At both ends, the belt is resilient. At the front a badge was attached. It shows the badge that is common on every fire brigade. This cross is based on the eight-pointed star which is symbolizing the Cross of St. John. The Cross of St. John emerges from the cross of the Order of Malta. The eight points are the knightly virtues: constitute the measure, courteous behavior, skill, observation, perseverance, loyalty, clarity and sympathy.
Although the badge is only available here in fragments, it seems quite certain that it is the badge of the "British Fire Services Association" (BFSA).
The leather helmets of Hendry LTD were very popular not only in Scotland but all were used in the Commonwealth (see helmet 125/365). From these helmets, in about 1960 comes out the helmets for British airport fire brigades (see helmet 122)
