Italy Leather helmet (˜1900)
In this collection since: 07.03.2013
0500 Fire helmet from Italy. The leather helmet was made in 1900 by the company Bergomi in Italy. Type: Milano. The black lacquered helmet consists of a helmet bowl, eye and neck shield. These are connected together at the side. Both shields are sewn to the helmet bowl. At the junction of the parts, a thick, circumferential bead is attached. Eye and neck shield are reinforced with a brass bezel. The brass comb shows that for this helmet, typical openings. There is the mounting screw at this point. In the background the comb is fastened by two brass plates. The badge on the front shows an exploding grenade which is provided with a cross. Below you can see two crossed axes.
The leather storm band mounted on two massive lion heads made of brass.
The brass plates between the lion heads and the leather storm band seem to have been made by hand. The leather helmet was used by many fire brigades in Italy. Due to the lion heads and the leather chin strap can assume that the helmet was worn in the region of South Tyrol. The autonomous region has always distanced himself from Rome and is intent on self-reliance.
