Sheetsteel helmet (˜1810)
In this collection since: 07.03.2013 |
0499 |
French fire helmet made of black painted iron sheet in 1810 with shingle conveyor. The sheet iron helmet was available with or without brass comb.
The body of the helmet consists of two parts, a cylindrical portion and a half-sphere. To this are the eyes and the neck shield mounted. The rosettes are very simple and without structure. The scales chain is considerably narrower than in the other helmets at that time, the individual units are only pressed into sheet metal. At the front is a brass badge. It shows two crossed axes and an exploding grenade. The leather helmet interior is partly preserved. The brass comb in this type was used only in the time around 1885 for fire helmets of later generations. It is conceivable that the helmet was originally worn without comb and then got the extra helmet crest.
