Kenya Cork helmet (˜1965)
In this collection since: 24.12.2012
0453 Fire helmet from Kenya. Manufactured to British Standard 3864 of 1965. Inner plastic, outside covered cork with black painted canvas. Type: Cromwell, Model: F135 County. Manufacturer is the English company Helmets Ltd. The helmet has been produced without the stamp of the manufacturing date and the head size. Also the chin strap is not leather with striking snaps but made of nylon, the length adjustment is plastic. The helmet color is black. The cited standard 3865 of 1965 indicates that the helmet is significantly older than the same type number: 382, 26, 117, 181, 119. The helmet was worn in 1990 in the main fire station in Mombasa, Kenya. Since Kenya was, in the period from 1920 to 1963 British Crown Colony, the fire brigades were equipped with Brithis helmets. The date of the British Standard suggests that the helmet was created around 1965 (after the periods of crown colony) and was worn in Mombasa. The rank of the user was a fireman. At the front is located a painted, white star with 6 prongs. Inside the letters "ASC". This can also be found on the left side again. On the right side is "FSC" written. The meanings are not known.
Today (2013) the fire service is provided by the company G4S Security Services Kenya Ltd. (Similar Falck in Denmark). Whether this is so in all of Kenya, and how long this company exist, is unknown.
