Kenya Synthetic helmet (˜1940)
In this collection since: 01.08.2012
0443 Fire helmet from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. The black fabric-phenolic resin helmet was made by the British company “National Phenol” produced in the years from 1940 to 1950. Since Kenya was British Crown Colony from 1920 to 1963, it is no surprise of finding this helmet in Nairobi. The helmet has a traditional British helmet shape. The phenolic resin-textile fabric can be seen inside the helmet very good. The outside is painted completely black. The inner helmet is mounted on a leather headband. This band is only attached at front and back on the helmet bowl. The leather chin strap has a separate attachment at the helmet bowl. It can be closed with snaps. At the front of the helmet, there are two holes, perhaps here was a badge attached. Adhesive residue suggest that an adhesive emblem was present. On the inside of the front screen is the logo of the company “National phenol” "NP" molded.
How long the helmet was worn in Nairobi, is not known. At present (2012), the fire brigade of Nairobi uses different helmets from PAB Fire, PAB Wildland, Rosenbauer and Cromwell.
