Japan Bamboo and cloth helmet (˜1935)
In this collection since: 21.02.2011
0375 Fire helmet from Japan. The helmet was worn in the period between 1935 and 1950 in the Japanese city of Nagasaki. The helmet however goes back in its shape and texture, already on the helmets of the 18th Century. The helmet itself is made of a bamboo basket weave, above a padded cotton cover. The Bell helmet is very high. At the front, the bell is going over into helmet visor, behind the helmet bell end without neck protection. The fabric cover on the helmet bell is made up of 6 segments. They are covered together in the middle by a metal fitting. The metal element "Sakura" shows 5 sheets. It is the cherry blossom, a traditional ornament of the fire department of Nagasaki which also is in the front badge shown. The neck protection cloth "Shikoro"is more bigger than normal neck protection leather. It is even larger than modern Holland clothes (special form of neck protection, coming from the Netherlands). The neck and shoulder protection are made of the same material as the helmet cover. It measures 33cm at the longest point, however, the front end is a little shorter. The shoulder protection is closed at the front, under the cutout for the eyes, by two buttons. Button holes and the edges of the shoulder protection are doubled up with a fine fabric and trimmed. The protection itself also consists of two halves, it is sewn around into the helmet. The words on the little badge on the neck protection are called "Daigo bundan" what meens the 5th Branch / department. This could be an indication of the station number. The helmet interior is not able to adjust for the head size. As a chin strap, there is a cotton belt that has to be tied under the chin.
The helmet was worn at the same time in Korea. He remained in the country, as the Japanese occupying forces withdrew in 1949 from Korea.
