Italy Fibre glas helmet (˜1920)
In this collection since: 15.05.2007
0291 Fire helmet from Italy. Modell Milano. Wear period between 1895 and 1935. The black helmet was produced of phenol resin or fiberglass. The outer form is based on the historical leather helmets from Germany, Italy or Switzerland. Definitely the very high style and the signpost edgings as well as the brass comb reminds of former leather helmets, from Switzerland (see helmet 138). Of the sequence of the material (in Germany there was brass helmets between 1850 till 1900, then to approx. 1916 leather helmets) this helmet completes the material row. While one was carrying the first "steel helmet" in Germany with the M16, in Italy at 1917 at municipal fire departments helmets of this type was worn. How long these helmets were in use isn't known, it is sure that before the introduction of the phenol resin helmets of Mispa, Pirelli or Violini (see helmet 44/165) at 1950 helmets made of metal were also worn. It has to be accepted, that in the first World War, like also in the second World War helmets were used after army examples. Helmets of this type were therefore worn only very briefly. The chinstrap which was usually attached inside isn't available. The badge attached to the front was worn only by the Milan Fire Department. In the round box is missing the symbol of the cross as it was later also worn on the successor helmets. (See helmet number 0718, Italy). The badge is attached by brackets inside the helmet.
